Peter, Muriel and I attended the Comedy Art festival at Stirling Gardens in January. We arrived early to get a good seat and then had several hours to kill before the main attraction Tripod appeared on stage. There was a number of art workshops in progress so Muriel and I watched an Aboriginal woman demonstrate traditional basket weaving. We were then given our own raw materials and set about making a basket each. Here's a series of photos of Muriel as she progressed in creating her masterpiece. It was interesting that neither of our baskets (which kept us amused for hours) turned out as we planned. It was as though the palm fronds used had a mind of their own. I believe Muriel may have even changed hers again when she got home. I think people in the groups around us thought we were a little odd sitting there with our pile of palm fronds and other bits and pieces used for decoration however when they saw the finished articles, were quite amazed at what we had produced.
