Eon Foundation Growing Healthier Communities

An excellent turnout of members and guests (Harry’s daughter Gill & 2 friends) enjoyed Marie- Louise Carroll’s presentation on the Eon Foundation. Marie- Louise is the Executive Manager of, and a passionate advocate for, the Foundation.

EON was established in 2005 in response to a large-scale investigation into aboriginal child health in WA. Eon started with a pilot garden at Djarindjin Lombadina in the West Kimberley of WA and has grown exponentially to 37 communities in WA & NT.

We learned that the Foundation’s activities address a number of needs of remote aboriginal communities, neatly encompassed within their branding “Growing Healthier Communities”.  Eon’s mission is to make a lasting contribution in remote Aboriginal communities through the reduction of preventable and chronic disease caused by poor nutrition. In partnership with those communities and using edible gardens as a tool, Eon delivers programs with a focus on health, nutrition, education and training that change community attitudes to healthy living.

Marie- Louise informed us that Eon only introduces its programs at the request of a community.  Initially Eon assesses whether a community has the resources to establish and maintain a large vegetable, fruit and bush tucker garden.  The Eon program has 3 components:

  • Edible Gardens- established in the community school with hands on gardening for students, parents and community members
  • Healthy Eating- using produce from the garden, teaching the nutritional value of fruit and vegetables and preparation of healthy food.
  • Education and training- developing skills in horticulture and nutrition. The training and mentoring of the community assistants Eon employs is an integral part of the program.

In 2019 Eon was a finalist in the Telstra Business Awards as a Social Change Maker.

Marie- Louise’s presentation was enthusiastically received, with several questions asked.
