The house building teams and house recipients after the handover ceremony

Cambodia WASH and House Building update

Club members Jane and Judy travelled to Cambodia in October 2017 as part of a Tabitha Foundation house building team and to visit the club's water, sanitation and hygiene (WASH) project in the Battambang province.

Supported by photos of the trip, they gave members an overview of both projects, particularly the WASH project managed by Cambodian Family Support under direction of Doctor Samnang.

The housebuilding was conducted in a village 1 1/2 hours drive from Phnom Penh and the team  built 13 houses. Once the families move into the houses, their income doubles over the next year as the parents are healthier and can go out to work, they are able to establish gardens and enter into trade of their produce and livestock.

They went Palin, to a village in far west Cambodia near the Thai border and met Dr Samnang, director of Cambodia Family Support, a local not-for-profit organisation which works with the poor in the Battambang province. Villages are approached to see if they are interested in setting up a self-help group and if so, CFS work with them to see what changes they want to make and help them implement the changes. Our club supported a WASH project in the district which was completed last year so it was good to see the changes the contribution from our club has enabled in the lives of the local people.

The villagers add to their sustainability by obtaining more livestock and feed for themselves starting with  loan animal from CFS.

Dr Samnang also pointed out the well-established womens refuge in the district

Perhaps the next phase would be to implement a school in the village to assist in the children's education.
