Mark in the village on Sumba

Mark Savage writes about

'Sumba Island'

I was at Sumba last week for 4 days, and I am happy to report that our clubs mosquito net project has reduced malaria in 2 villages over the past 2 years by over 80%. The people here are so poor, the only other time I have seen such poor places is in Africa.

Rotarian, Dr Claus Bogh, a renowned vector disease specialist who works most of the time in Sumba is pictured with two children whose lives have been saved by Rotary Seminyak projects.

Seminyak Rotary club also supports another group of volunteers to run a small project to help the poorest mothers and children in Bali and Aceh provinces. Their goal has been to develop and implement a community based sustainable family cooperative health care model, targeting marginalised communites and families primarily in Bali, and they have done an outstanding job to date with only limited resources.

After the Tsunami that hit Aceh, Robin Lim the founder of Yayasan Bumi Sehat Foundation and several volunteer midwives traveled to Aceh to aid in the relief efforts and have been operating a clinic there ever since. Our Bali clinic has suffered as so much funding and effort has been channeled into Aceh over the past year and a half .

Those beloved treated mosquito nets

Dr Claus Bogh with two children saved

I have personally known Robin for four years and she helped deliver one of my sons in February this year. I see how hard she works and how she puts her own needs aside to assist others. Her dedication to helping those less fortunate is humbling. In September this year Robin is rightfully being awarded the Alexander Langer International Peace Award in recognition for her selfless dedication over the years.

We here at RC Bali Seminyak really want to help Robin and her team, however the small donations we have raised to date simply have little impact. (the last funding we raised came from RC Bromsgrove, Maekong Thai restaurant & the Bromsgrove Fire Service who jointly helped to raise six thousand five hundred pounds for Robin's clinic in Aceh.

Essentially, we would appreciate your wisdom, guidance and hopefully some ideas and co-operation on how we can help Robin raise the badly needed funding to support her clinics and staff. Our ultimate goal is to raise enough money to purchase a plot of land and build a proper purpose built clinic.
